Creating Your First Flipbook

Turning a PDF into a beautiful, interactive flipbook takes just a few minutes with ZenFlip. This guide walks you through the entire process from upload to publish.

Step 1: Upload Your PDF

  1. From your dashboard, click + New Publication

  2. You'll be taken to the publication creation screen

  3. Click Upload PDF or drag and drop your file into the upload area

  4. Select a PDF file from your computer

ZenFlip accepts PDF files up to the size limit for your plan. For the best results, use a PDF with high-resolution images and embedded fonts. See our PDF File Requirements guide for detailed specifications.

Step 2: Automatic Conversion

Once your PDF is uploaded, ZenFlip's conversion engine gets to work automatically. Here's what happens behind the scenes:

  1. Processing - Each page of your PDF is rendered at high quality using our MuPDF + Sharp pipeline

  2. Optimization - Pages are optimized for fast loading across all devices

  3. Thumbnail Generation - Preview thumbnails are created for each page

You'll see a progress indicator while conversion is underway. For most PDFs, conversion takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on page count and complexity. You can navigate away - the conversion continues in the background, and you'll be notified when it's complete.

What if conversion takes longer? PDFs with many high-resolution images or complex vector graphics may take a bit longer. If conversion stalls for more than 10 minutes, see our PDF Conversion Issues troubleshooting guide.

Step 3: Configure Your Publication

While your PDF is converting (or after it finishes), fill in the publication details:

  • Title - Give your flipbook a descriptive name

  • Slug - The URL-friendly identifier (auto-generated from the title, but you can customize it)

  • Description - A brief summary that appears in search results and social shares

  • Visibility - Choose who can see your flipbook:

    • Public - Anyone with the link can view it

    • Private - Only you and your team can view it

    • Password Protected - Viewers must enter a password to access it

You can always change these settings later from the publication's settings page.

Step 4: Preview Your Flipbook

Once conversion is complete, click Preview to see your flipbook in action. The flipbook viewer includes:

  • Page-flip animation - Realistic page-turning effect that mimics a real book

  • Keyboard navigation - Use arrow keys to flip pages

  • Touch support - Swipe left and right on mobile and tablet devices

  • Zoom - Pinch to zoom on touch devices, or use the zoom controls

  • Table of contents - Quick navigation to any page

  • Fullscreen mode - Expand the viewer to fill the entire screen

Take a moment to flip through your publication and make sure everything looks right. Check that images are crisp, text is readable, and the page order is correct.

Step 5: Publish

When you're happy with the preview:

  1. Click Publish to make your flipbook live

  2. You'll see a confirmation with your flipbook's public URL

  3. Copy the link and share it with your audience

Your flipbook is now live and accessible based on the visibility settings you chose.
