Creating Your First Flipbook

Upload a PDF, watch it convert automatically, preview the result, and publish your first interactive flipbook.

Creating Your First Flipbook

Turning a PDF into a beautiful, interactive flipbook takes just a few minutes with ZenFlip. This guide walks you through the entire process from upload to publish.

Step 1: Upload Your PDF

  1. From your dashboard, click + New Publication

  1. You'll be taken to the publication creation screen

  1. Click Upload PDF or drag and drop your file into the upload area

  1. Select a PDF file from your computer

ZenFlip accepts PDF files up to the size limit for your plan. For the best results, use a PDF with high-resolution images and embedded fonts. See our PDF File Requirements guide for detailed specifications.

Step 2: Automatic Conversion

Once your PDF is uploaded, ZenFlip's conversion engine gets to work automatically. Here's what happens behind the scenes:

  1. Processing - Each page of your PDF is rendered at high quality using our MuPDF + Sharp pipeline

  1. Optimization - Pages are optimized for fast loading across all devices

  1. Thumbnail Generation - Preview thumbnails are created for each page

You'll see a progress indicator while conversion is underway. For most PDFs, conversion takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on page count and complexity. You can navigate away - the conversion continues in the background, and you'll be notified when it's complete.

What if conversion takes longer? PDFs with many high-resolution images or complex vector graphics may take a bit longer. If conversion stalls for more than 10 minutes, see our PDF Conversion Issues troubleshooting guide.

Step 3: Configure Your Publication

While your PDF is converting (or after it finishes), fill in the publication details:

  • Title - Give your flipbook a descriptive name

  • Slug - The URL-friendly identifier (auto-generated from the title, but you can customize it)

  • Description - A brief summary that appears in search results and social shares

  • Visibility - Choose who can see your flipbook:

  • Public - Anyone with the link can view it

  • Private - Only you and your team can view it

  • Password Protected - Viewers must enter a password to access it

You can always change these settings later from the publication's settings page.

Step 4: Preview Your Flipbook

Once conversion is complete, click Preview to see your flipbook in action. The flipbook viewer includes:

  • Page-flip animation - Realistic page-turning effect that mimics a real book

  • Keyboard navigation - Use arrow keys to flip pages

  • Touch support - Swipe left and right on mobile and tablet devices

  • Zoom - Pinch to zoom on touch devices, or use the zoom controls

  • Table of contents - Quick navigation to any page

  • Fullscreen mode - Expand the viewer to fill the entire screen

Take a moment to flip through your publication and make sure everything looks right. Check that images are crisp, text is readable, and the page order is correct.

Step 5: Publish

When you're happy with the preview:

  1. Click Publish to make your flipbook live

  1. You'll see a confirmation with your flipbook's public URL

  1. Copy the link and share it with your audience

Your flipbook is now live and accessible based on the visibility settings you chose.

What's Next?

After publishing, you have plenty of options to get more out of your flipbook:

Updating a Published Flipbook

Need to update your flipbook? You can upload a new version of the PDF at any time:

  1. Open the publication from your dashboard

  1. Click Upload New Version

  1. Select the updated PDF

  1. The new version will be converted and replace the previous one

ZenFlip keeps a version history, so you can always refer back to earlier versions if needed.

Hotspots and new versions

Hotspots you added — video, audio, image, text, embeds and so on — belong to the version they were made on. They do not move to a new upload automatically. Links found in the PDF itself are different: ZenFlip detects them again in each new file, so they carry over on their own.

Before you upload a replacement, ZenFlip warns you that the current version's hotspots will stay behind. To bring them across afterwards:

  1. On the publication's page, go to Version History

  2. An older version that has hotspots shows a button such as Copy 24 hotspots to live. Click it and confirm

  3. Hotspots are matched by page number (page 5 to page 5). Any page of the live version that already has its own hotspots is left alone

The message afterwards says how many were copied and how many pages were skipped, and has an Undo button that removes everything that copy added in one go.

Check the result in the editor, especially if the new file added or removed pages: a hotspot is copied to the same page number, not the same content.
